Mandela dies

Image
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the father of the nation, died on December 5 2013 at the age of 95. President Jacob Zuma made the announcement from the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday night. He said Mandela passed away at 8.50pm at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg, surrounded by his wife, Graça Machel and members of his family. Zuma said Mandela would have a state funeral and that flags would fly half-mast from December 6 until after the funeral. Zuma called on South Africans to "recall the values for which Madiba fought". Long illness Mandela was hospitalised on June 8 with a recurring lung infection. Initial reports from the Presidency suggested Mandela was stable, although his condition was serious. But on June 23, the Presidency announced that Mandela's condition had deteriorated and he was critical. Court affidavits soon confirmed that the former statesman was on an assisted-breathing, life support machine. More reports emerged about Mandela in the

candice for woolworths

Image
We selected Candice Swanepoel to represent the brand because she’s a South African model who has attained worldwide success, being most well-known for being a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Her look, attitude, and achievements were well aligned with those of the RE: brand,’ said a spokesperson for Woolworths. ‘Far from being “just a pretty face”, she encapsulates the spirit of modern rebellion and the vibrant optimism of our time.’ The new campaign shows Candice modelling the RE: Festival Collection. The denim items illustrate a return to authentic indigo/blue denim and a washed ‘worn & torn’ aesthetic with denim-on-denim outfitting a key look. The new slim ‘boyfriend’ jeans makes an appearance and we see lots of laundered and bleached garments as well as hammered fabrics for an aged appearance. Bleached pastels, blues and white are key colour combinations with a black ‘glam’ element introduced for holiday dress-up. Think embellished pleather shorts and biker jackets. Miss Sw

The New Smoky Eye THE classic smoky eye has had an autumn/winter 2013 update, re-imagined in creamy textures, glossy finishes and bold, monochromatic hues. In fact, for this season it's more of an oily eye than a smoky one, with gently diffused shadow making way for colour blended with glosses or creams and painted in confident swoops extending almost to the brows. And there's no need for a full eye palette this season - it's all about picking one colour and sticking to it. Think polished chestnut, as at Tom Ford, Roksanda Ilincic and DSquared2; molten metallic burgundy, seen at Gucci; or the oil-slick black that was used for the dramatic looks at Roberto Cavalli, Donna Karan and Lanvin.

AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON

Image
AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON Africa Fashion Week turned London’s coolest of cool Truman Brewery in Brick Lane into a fashion ode to our continent last weekend. The shows celebrated London’s diverse African heritage through fashion interpreting various ethnic textile traditions into contemporary designs. Thula Sindi Proudly representing South Africa is Thula Sindi, who stuck to his familiar feminine styling. With florals, metallics and lace embellishment against ladylike pleats and sheer tulle, Sindi stays current but true to his signature style. There is also a continuation from his last collection at MBFWJ Autumn/Winter 2012/2013 with the use of finely pleated ribbon and structured hips. Tumisola Ladega This collection of beautiful monochromatic African prints showed thoughtful design detail and some of the best tailoring at African Fashion Week London. This is really impressive when you find out the designer is only 14 years old! Tumisola Ladega is a Nigerian-bo

Vuitton Celebrates Its Muses

Image
From Kate To Sofia: Vuitton Celebrates Its Muses LOUIS VUITTON will celebrate six of its timeless muses with a new interactive exhibition opening in Tokyo this month. The showcase will pay homage to six women who "move frontiers" - namely Kate Moss, Sofia Coppola, Catherine Deneuve, novelist Françoise Sagan, architect Charlotte Perriand and, perhaps more unexpectedly, nineteenth-century French Empress consort Eugénie de Montijo. The display will be held in luxury hotel Tokyo Station for three weeks. Although little is known yet about what will go on show at the exhibition, visitors will be asked to wear masks with polarised lenses and white screen technology - WWD reports.

Kim Kardashian Makes First Post-Baby Appearance on Kris Jenner's Talk Show

Image
Kim Kardashian Makes First Post-Baby Appearance on Kris Jenner's Talk Show Lovely to see you, Kim Kardashian! On Friday, the new mom made her first post-baby public appearance on mom Kris Jenner's talk show. Kris, joined by cohost Sean "Diddy" Combs for the day, had no idea North West's mom was planning to surprise her on air. "Hi, Mom! I just wanted to say hi," Kim said, joining the duo via satellite. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there…I'm loving life a little bit too much right now!" And while she understandably has her hands pretty full these days, Kim would never miss mom's show. "I watch you every single day," she said. "You are so amazing. You really are born to do this. I just wanted to say I love you, and have an amazing show." Although Kris was too moved at the moment to chat, she did talk earlier in the show about how Kim's shedding those pregnancy pounds. Telling Diddy he was

CARA DELEVINGNE gets close to the insanely talented Pharrell Williams

CARA DELEVINGNE gets close to the insanely talented Pharrell Williams in Vogue's September issue, and now you can join them both on the shoot with a clip from our behind-the-scenes film shot exclusively for the iPad. Watch Delevingne giggle goofily as Pharrell smoothly compliments her on her "depth" and "spirit", then see the pair wrap their arms around one another, dance and pose as David Bailey snaps away. "David Bailey's faces and sounds - he makes some pretty wild faces," said Pharrell of working with the legendary photographer. "He's a genius, but that's his work isn't it?" See more behind-the-scenes action from the shoot in the September issue iPad app available later today from iTunes. The film is cut to Happy, a Pharrell song from the Despicable Me film soundtrack. Letter from S*

Letter from   S* Fashion shoots are about how clothes are styled, but in our own way we all take part in a similar activity every morning when we get dressed. By choosing how to put our look together each day, most of us are also deciding what message we want to give out about ourselves Do you make your decision on the basis of your diary for the day? On the influence of a film you've just seen? Or on the excitement of a new purchase? We all confront the business of dressing in different ways and it's interesting to  hear how others do it. firece & love S*

Project Runway

Image
Should This Advert Have Been Banned? AN advert promoting the twelfth series of Project Runway, starring Heidi Klum, has been banned in Los Angeles - because it features nude models. The image depicts Klum dressed in full Marie Antoinette-style regalia and perched on a throne - with presenter Tim Gunn beside her - while a group of naked male and female models gather at her feet. "Project Runway designers! We need clothing for these people! Fast!" Klum Tweeted. "Season 12 starts July 18th on Lifetime TV." The poster has been deemed too risqué to go on public display in LA - with reports suggesting that underwear will be digitally added to the models before it can be unveiled on city billboards. However, it seems that New York has opted to run the advert as it is. what do u think?

Vodacom Durban July

Image
High fashion at the Vodacom Durban July THE "Posh? Oh My Gosh!" theme for this year's Vodacom Durban July was interpreted in many different ways by the fashion-conscious. The Greyville Racecourse was transformed into a runway 06/07/2013 as an endless stream of invited guests used the country's biggest horse racing event as a fashion parade. Businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo made a grand entrance on the arm of husband Romeo, and there was a mini stampede as groupies of all sorts clamoured to have their pictures taken with her. Kumalo kept it safe in a Gavin Rajah creation in her favourite colours - black and white - accessorised with a glittering obi belt. Jessica Motaung, the first lady of Kaizer Chiefs, put together an outfit with a modern African twist coupled with knots and animal print, and paired her burnt orange Kenzo wrap dress with oversized Victoria Beckham sunnies. "That's the Posh of my outfit," she said. "For me, this
